RIP Jason Molina of Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co.

Lorain native and Oberlin alumnus Jason Molina passed away at the age of 39 this past weekend. Molina began his career as a heavy metal bassist in the Cleveland area, and went on to play a major role in Secretly Canadian Records’ rise to prominence. Molina released his self-titled debut LP in 1997 as Songs: Ohia and continued releasing records under this name until 2003, when he released his most critically-acclaimed album “Magnolia Electric Co.” Though Molina did not ever DJ his own show on WOBC, alumnus Eoin Russel states, “Jason and I would cover radio shows when people canceled. We’d play really bad classic rock from the 70s, and metal. We would get lots of complaints on the phone. I don’t recall him having his own show.” Some things never change around here…

Present WOBC DJs should fill the airwaves of Lorain County this week with tracks by Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co and check out the great photo located in the basement of Wilder of Songs: Ohia playing live in the ‘Sco. We offer our condolences to all of Jason’s friends and family. RIP.

In Memoriam: Erwin Lee Armstrong (Bluegrass Erwin)

Bluegrass Erwin
Erwin Lee Armstrong (1944-2012)

The entire WOBC community mourns the loss of its longtime friend and station member Erwin Armstrong, known on air as Bluegrass Erwin. Featuring “the best bluegrass in the state of Ohio,” his show Bluegrass Special has been a fixture on the airwaves of WOBC since 2001. Since then Erwin has shared his love of bluegrass every Wednesday with Lorain County listeners, week in and week out up until this past semester. It was a true pleasure having Erwin on the air for the past eleven years, and it was an even greater pleasure getting to know him. As one of our most enthusiastic DJs, he will surely be missed by WOBC station members and all of his listeners. Our condolences go out to his family and many friends. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Cleveland Clinic Hospice, 6801 Brecksville Road, Suite 10, Independence, OH 44131.

In honor of Bluegrass Erwin, we will begin our Winter Term broadcasting with a two-hour-long tribute show during Erwin’s old timeslot featuring selections from his playlists over the past 10 years. Tune in on Wednesday, January 9th from 3-5 PM to listen in, and to perhaps call in and share some memories on air.

Why Independent Freeform Radio?

Let’s remember the alternative.

There are no “minor leagues” and “major leagues” here, no contractual obligations to corporations, and no advertising dollars anywhere. New and interesting music is played 24/7, rather than being shoved into the middle of the night. We are completely independent and freeform from now until infinity.

Plus…Sean Price on the come-up??? Sean Price has been out here for more than a decade. He also has been reporting on hurricanes as of late.

But in all seriousness, his 2005 classic Monkey Barz is well-worth a listen.
